Allan Williams, the first manager of The Beatles who drove the band on their formative trip to Hamburg in 1960, has died at the age of 86, his old club announced.
The Jacaranda Club in Liverpool, northwest England, posted the news late Friday on its Facebook page, saying his death earlier that day was “one of the saddest days in our history”.
“The Jacaranda’s original owner and the man who discovered The Beatles, Allan Williams, has sadly passed away at the age of 86,” it said.
The band were frequent visitors to the Jacaranda and John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe were tasked by Williams to paint a mural in the club, according to The Beatles Story exhibition.
They went on to play there several times and Williams organised their first residency in Hamburg in Germany.
“No Allan Williams, no Hamburg. No Hamburg, no Beatles,” said Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn in a tribute message on Twitter.
Williams parted ways with the band in 1961 and they went on to sign with Brian Epstein.

Choir member quits rather than sing at trumps inauguration

A member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has quit the group rather than sing at Donald Trump’s inauguration and appear to endorse “tyranny and fascism.”
In a resignation letter posted on her Facebook page Thursday, Jan Chamberlin said she had agonised over whether to sing at the January 20 ceremony and “spent several sleepless nights and days in turmoil.”
She said her only option, finally, was to quit the famed choir.
“I simply cannot continue with the recent turn of events,” she wrote. “I could never look myself in the mirror again with self-respect.”
The singer, who had been with the choir for five years, said her decision came down to upholding her moral values.
“I only know I could never ‘throw roses to Hitler.’ And I certainly could never sing for him,” she wrote.
Chamberlin said while she respected the choir’s bid to be politically neutral, “I also know, looking from the outside in, it will appear that (the) choir is endorsing tyranny and fascism by singing for this man.”
Her open letter came a week after it was announced that the 360-member choir, which has a long tradition of performing for presidents, and the Radio City Rockettes would appear at Trump’s inauguration.
Several members of the dance troupe have also expressed reservations about performing at the event.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which runs the choir, would not comment on Chamberlin’s decision. A spokesman said performing at the inauguration was voluntary and that only a limited number of singers would participate due to limited space.
A petition urging the choir to snub the ceremony has gained nearly 24,000 signatures.
Only a smattering of artists backed Trump’s election bid and the Republican president-elect has struggled to pin down big names for the January 20 event in Washington, with high-profile stars including Elton John turning down invites.

Scientists have found that an active ingredient of pungent substances, such as chilli and pepper, inhibits the growth of tumours.Capsaicin – responsible for the fiery sensation after consumption – also caused triple-negative cells to die in their masses.
Currently chemotherapy is the only treatment option for the most aggressive form of breast cancer. And experts warn that it is unlikely just eating lots of spice alone could help to combat the disease.
Researchers from Ruhr-University at Bochum, Germany, carried out tests on cell cultures designed to replicate triple-negative breast cancer.
Capsaicin was added to them for a period of several hours each day. The existence of the Transient Receptor Potential Channels (TRPV1) was found in nine different samples from patients with breast cancer.
As a result, the cancerous cells divided more slowly, the findings published in the journal Breast Cancer – Targets and Therapy found.It also allowed them to die in larger numbers, preventing the surviving cells to move as quickly – impairing their ability to spread around the body.
Lead author Professor Hanns Hatt said: “If we could switch on the TRPV1 receptor with specific drugs, this might constitute a new treatment approach for this type of cancer.”
Capsaicin is known to provide temporarily relief of muscle or joint pain caused by strains, arthritis and bruising.While previous research has also found it can help to kill other forms of cancer.The compound was discovered by scientists, from the Indian Institute of Technology, to bind to cells’ membranes – the protective outer shell.
But in high enough doses, it helped to pull the membrane apart, triggering cancerous cells to “commit suicide.” And in 2014, French physiologists found that men with a taste for spicy foods tend to have higher levels of testosterone.
They believed their findings were linked to well documented evidence that chilli peppers can increase levels of the hormones in rats. Other studies have found that the chemical arvanil – with a chemical make-up similar to that of the capsaicin – was effective against brain tumours in mice.
However, because of its side effects, the substance is not approved for humans.Also, researchers have shown in mouse studies that the pungent compound in ginger, 6-ginergol, could counteract capsaicin’s potentially harmful effects. In combination with the capsaicin, 6-gingerol could lower the risk of cancer, they say.
The study was published in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.Both chili peppers and ginger are widely used spices in certain cuisines, particularly in Asia, and have been studied for potential health effects. Although some studies have shown that peppers can have benefits, others suggest that diets rich in capsaicin might be associated with stomach cancer. Ginger, however, has shown promise as a health-promoting ingredient. Oddly enough, capsaicin and 6-gingerol both bind to the same cellular receptor — one that is related to tumor growth. Jiahuan Li, Gangjun Du and colleagues wanted to further investigate this apparent contradiction.
Over several weeks, the researchers fed mice prone to lung cancer either capsaicin or 6-gingerol alone, or a combination of both. During the study period, all of the mice that received only capsaicin developed lung carcinomas while only half of the mice fed 6-gingerol did. Surprisingly, an even lower percentage — only 20 percent — of the mice given both compounds developed cancer. The researchers also dug into the potential molecular underpinnings of how the compounds interact to lead to this effect.
Meanwhile, new study suggests that eating spicy food more frequently as part of a daily diet is associated with a lower risk of death. The association was also found for deaths from certain conditions such as cancer, and ischemic heart and respiratory diseases.
This is an observational study so no definitive conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect, but the authors call for more research that may “lead to updated dietary recommendations and development of functional foods.”
The study was published in British Medical Journal (BMJ).Previous research has suggested that beneficial effects of spices and their bioactive ingredient, capsaicin, include anti-obesity, antioxidant, anti-inflammation and anticancer properties .
So an international team led by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences examined the association between consumption of spicy foods as part of a daily diet and the total risk and causes of death.
They undertook a prospective study of 487,375 participants, aged 30-79 years, from the China Kadoorie Biobank. Participants were enrolled between 2004-2008 and followed up for morbidities and mortality.
All participants completed a questionnaire about their general health, physical measurements, and consumption of spicy foods, and red meat, vegetable and alcohol.
Participants with a history of cancer, heart disease, and stroke were excluded from the study, and factors such as age, marital status, level of education, and physical activity were accounted for.
During a median follow-up of 7.2 years, there were 20,224 deaths.Compared with participants who ate spicy foods less than once a week, those who consumed spicy foods one or two days a week were at a 10 per cent reduced risk of death (hazard ratios for death was 0.90). And those who ate spicy foods three to five and six or seven days a week were at a 14 per cent reduced risk of death (hazard ratios for death 0.86, and 0.86 respectively).
In other words, participants who ate spicy foods almost every day had a relative 14 per cent lower risk of death compared to those who consumed spicy foods less than once a week.
The association was similar in both men and women, and was stronger in those who did not consume alcohol.Frequent consumption of spicy foods was also linked to a lower risk of death from cancer, and ischaemic heart and respiratory system diseases, and this was more evident in women than men.
Fresh and dried chilli peppers were the most commonly used spices in those who reported eating spicy foods weekly, and further analysis showed those who consumed fresh chilli tended to have a lower risk of death from cancer, ischaemic heart disease, and diabetes.
Some of the bioactive ingredients are likely to drive this association, the authors explain, adding that fresh chilli is richer in capsaicin, vitamin C, and other nutrients. But they caution against linking any of these with lowering the risk of death.
Should people eat spicy food to improve health? In an accompanying editorial, Nita Forouhi from the University of Cambridge says it is too early to tell, and calls for more research to test whether these associations are the direct result of spicy food intake or whether this is a marker for other dietary or lifestyle factors.

The controversy on whether sugar and red meat causes ill health such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and cancer or not has refused to go away.
A study funded by food companies has challenged recommendations by public health officials for people to cut sugar consumption, saying there was no clear link between consumption of added sugar and health effects.
The study is the latest response by food companies including candy and soda makers to a growing consensus among scientists and public health officials that the sweetener is to blame for rises in the incidence of obesity and diabetes. The report comes as a number of local governments in the United States are introducing sugar and soda taxes aimed at reducing consumption.
“Guidelines on dietary sugar do not meet criteria for trustworthy recommendations and are based on low-quality evidence,” said Bradley Johnston of The Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute and co-authors in an article published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (AIM).
The review of research used as a basis for policymaking was funded by the International Life Sciences Institute, which includes among its members Coca Cola Co, PepsiCo Inc, Mars Inc and Hershey Co.
The report questions the quality of evidence used by organizations including the U.S. government, the World Health Organization (WHO) and others that have advised people to cut down consumption of added sugars to promote health.
Differing recommendations from organizations are confusing to the public, the report said.
Also, red meat has been condemned as a cancer-causing, blood pressure-raising no-no.
Indeed, nutritional guidelines in both the United Kingdom (U.K.) and the United States (U.S.) advise eating no more than 70g of beef, pork, or steak per day.
But a new review of clinical trials from Purdue University has found quite the opposite.
According to the study, eating more than the recommended daily amount of red meat does not affect short-term heart disease risk factors, such as blood pressure and blood cholesterol.
In fact, they found unprocessed red meat to be a good source of nutrients for patients.
“During the last 20 years, there have been recommendations to eat less red meat as part of a healthier diet, but our research supports that red meat can be incorporated into a healthier diet,” said Wayne Campbell, professor of nutrition science. Red meat is a nutrient-rich food, not only as a source for protein but also bio-available iron.”
The recommendations to limit red meat from the diet come mainly from studies that look at the dietary habits of people with cardiovascular disease.
Although these studies showed these people typically ate red meat, they were not designed to show that red meat caused cardiovascular disease.
To investigate the issue further Professor Campbell, worked with doctoral student Lauren O’Connor, and postdoctoral researcher Jung Eun Kim, to conduct a review and analysis of past clinical trials.
Their aim was to detect cause and effect between eating habits and health risks.They screened hundreds of related research articles, focusing on studies that met specific criteria including the amount of red meat consumed, evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk factors and study design.
An analysis of the 24 studies that met the criteria is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
“We found that consuming more than half a serving per day of red meat, which is equivalent to a three ounce serving three times per week, did not worsen blood pressure and blood total cholesterol, High Density Lipo-protein (HDL)/ ‘good’ cholesterol, Low Density Lipo-protein (LDL)/bad cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations, which are commonly screened by health-care providers,’ O’Connor said.
This research includes all types of red meat, mostly unprocessed beef and pork. Professor Campbell said more analysis is needed as the evaluation of blood pressure and cholesterol are not the sole determinants for someone to develop heart disease. The length of time these experiments were done ranged from a few weeks to a few months as opposed to the years or decades that it could take people to develop cardiovascular disease or have a cardiovascular event.
Meanwhile, in a rare move, AIM published an editorial in the same issue that slammed the latest study as a ‘politicization of science’ and said that recent guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Public Health England and WHO all show ‘remarkable consistency.’
AIM decided to publish both the new study and the critical editorial because sugar consumption is ‘of great interest’ to readers and their patients, said Editor-in-Chief Christine Laine in an emailed statement.

Atletico Madrid’s chief executive director, Miguel Angel Gil Marin says he is hoping that city rivals, Real Madrid rekindle their interest and finally sign Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, as his side would benefit from advertisements.

Sony Music Entertainment apologized to Britney Spears and her fans after its Twitter account was hacked and falsely reported the pop star’s death, just over two years after a major cyber-attack crippled its parent company’s film division.
The tweets, which appear to have since been deleted, included “RIP @britneyspears #RIPBritney 1981-2016,” according to USA Today. The issue has been fixed, Sony Music said in a statement Monday.
“Sony Music apologizes to Britney Spears and her fans for any confusion,” the company said in the statement. “This has been rectified.”
The erroneous tweets follow a cyber-attack that forced Sony Pictures Entertainment to take its entire computer network offline two years ago. U.S. officials have blamed that incident, revealed in November 2014, on North Korean hackers angered over the Seth Rogen spy-caper comedy “The Interview,” a movie that depicted the assassination of Kim Jong Un. Amy Pascal, the Sony Corp. studio’s co-chairman at the time, left the position months later after e-mails containing jokes about President Barack Obama were made public by hackers.

People with hyperhidrosis — an excessive sweating condition — also seem to have higher-than-average rates of anxiety and depression, a new study suggests.
Roughly 21 percent and 27 percent of people with hyperhidrosis screened positive for anxiety or depression, respectively. That compared with 7.5 percent and just under 10 percent of other patients, the study revealed.
The findings are published in the December issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.The findings do not prove that hyperhidrosis caused those mental health issues. In some cases, excessive sweating may be part of an anxiety disorder, for example.
“It’s not clear if this is cause-and-effect,” said Dr. Dee Glaser, a professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, United States (U.S.).
So the findings don’t necessarily imply that better control of hyperhidrosis would ease people’s depression and anxiety, according to Glaser, who wasn’t involved in the study.
“But,” she said, “dermatologists should be aware of the higher prevalence of anxiety and depression in these patients.”And if necessary, Glaser added, they can refer patients to a mental health professional.
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes people to sweat excessively and unpredictably — including when they’re at rest or in cool conditions. It’s estimated that about three percent of Americans have hyperhidrosis, according to the International Hyperhidrosis Society.
There are treatments, such as strong antiperspirants, Botox injections for underarm sweating, and electrical stimulation to dial down sweat-gland activity in the hands and feet.
Still, it’s common for people with hyperhidrosis to feel self-conscious and avoid social activities — or even things as mundane as raising a hand in class, Glaser said.
“For people who don’t have hyperhidrosis, it’s easy to think, ‘Oh, it’s just sweating,’” Glaser noted. “The impact it can have on quality of life has always been underestimated.”
For the new study, Dr. Youwen Zhou and colleagues wanted to get a clearer idea of whether overt depression and anxiety disorders are especially common among people with hyperhidrosis.
The researchers had just over 2,000 patients at two dermatology clinics — one in Canada and one in China — answer standard questionnaires that screen for depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
It turned out that both conditions were more common among hyperhidrosis patients, and the risk was higher when their sweating problems were more severe, the findings showed.
“This study suggests that hyperhidrosis is tightly linked to depression and anxiety,” said Zhou, who directs the Vancouver Hyperhidrosis Clinic at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada.
But like Glaser, he said the findings do not necessarily mean that hyperhidrosis is the cause.In fact, Zhou said, it may be “more likely” that some other underlying factors contribute to both hyperhidrosis and depression and anxiety. “More research is needed to uncover this mechanism,” he said.
For now, both Zhou and Glaser suggested that hyperhidrosis patients talk to their doctors about any mental health symptoms.“Don’t feel like you have to just live with it,” Glaser said.

Popular Nigerian musician and Woju crooner, Daniel Anidugbe, aka Kiss Daniel, on Monday escaped death while performing at the Calabar Christmas Village.
It was gathered that some robbers had stormed the village at about 1am and shot repeatedly into the air while dispossessing fun seekers of their belongings.
Several persons sustained various degrees of injuries from gun shots.
The Calabar Christmas Village, which is located at Calabar Municipal Council Secretariat, opens for 24 hours from December 1 to December 31 every year as a central location of revelry.
According to reports, while Kiss was on stage, the bandits came and carted away some of his belongings.
Speaking with Punch, an injured shop owner in the village, Glory Andem, said the presence of robbers became obvious when some spectators started throwing bottles at the musician.
She said, “It was a serious situation and I got injured. What happened was that some guys came into the village and tried to rob Kiss Daniel when he was singing, ‘Oya talk to me o mama.’
“They were throwing bottles and other things at him. Before we knew it, they brought out guns and started shooting. Some security men immediately rushed to the singer. But even with the security, the robbers rushed at him and removed his clothes and collected things from him.
“They would have killed that guy. To be honest, I don’t know how he managed to escape. You know there are several thousands of people in the Christmas village usually and the situation led to a serious pandemonium.
“They broke up everything in my shop. They took all my money. They robbed a lot of shops. Our chairs were broken. Everybody was running at the same time. It was a terrible experience.
“Several cars were vandalised. They broke the cars to steal from them. At a point, the lights went off and I thought I was going to die. As I speak with you, I have a serious cut from the incident and I want to go to a hospital to take a tetanus injections.”
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Ozi-Obeh, said it was not a robbery attack, but a misunderstanding between the organisers.
“There was no robbery incident in Calabar and nobody was attacked by robbers in any other part of Cross River State.
“What happened was that the government had initially planned to host the musician at the stadium, but the plan was changed to the Calabar Christmas Village. They probably had misunderstanding with the organisers”, he said.

Mourinho at it again as he accuses EPL of favouring Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has led a chorus of dismay among Chelsea’s title rivals about the festive fixture schedule after accusing the Premier League of “choosing to give rest for some and to create problems for others”.
Premier League leaders Chelsea play three games in 10 days whereas Manchester United, Manchester City and Spurs play three matches in eight days and Liverpool have three fixtures in seven days.
Chelsea – who are six points clear in the title race and have no European football to contend with this season – also have longer rest periods between matches and comparatively short distances to travel whereas Arsenal, whose manager Arsene Wenger has also denounced the schedule, play two games in three days at the start of the new year.
Mourinho did not name Chelsea but it was clear the United manager had his former club in mind as he launched a fresh attack on the fixture list. The Portuguese has already complained publicly this season about the scheduling of United’s Premier League matches either side of Europa League ties.
“The busy period is for some clubs, not for everyone,” Mourinho said. “If you analyse the fixtures there is no congestion for them. It looks like the fixtures are chosen to give rest for some and to create problems to others.
“But we are used to it because we are in the Europa League and the Europa League is a competition that creates more difficulties.”
Meanwhile, Mourinho has said Morgan Schneiderlin has asked to leave Old Trafford and that he will not stand in the France midfielder’s way if an acceptable offer is forthcoming.

Crystal palace get a new boss

Crystal Palace appointed former England manager Sam Allardyce as their new boss on Friday on a two-and-a-half-year contract.
“We are delighted to be able to make an appointment so quickly and fortunate that someone of Sam’s calibre and experience was available,” Eagles chairman Steve Parish said, a day after sacking Alan Pardew.
Allardyce’s first game in charge will be Monday’s English Premier League match at Watford.
Allardyce was seen at the south London club’s training ground for talks earlier Friday.
Speaking to Sky Sports News television, Allardyce, 62, described Palace as a “fantastic” opportunity to return to Premier League management.
Pardew was sacked on Thursday following a miserable run of results, with the Eagles winning just four of their 17 league matches this season and only one of their last 11.
Palace are only one point above the relegation zone.
Allardyce has been out of the game since being sacked by England in late September after just one match in charge following ill-advised remarks to undercover reporters.

John Obi Mikel’s agent, John Shittu, has admitted that clubs are queuing up to sign his client, but says they must be willing to pay what the player deserves.
Shittu says a lot of teams have asked about Mikel Obi from Italy and he is likely to move in January.
The 29-year-old has not featured at all for Chelsea this season, but his agent says there are no problems with manager Antonio Conte.
“John does not have problems with his manager,” Shittu told The Sun.
“They have a normal and professional relationship.
“The salary [in his next contract] will be important, commensurate with his value, but the most important thing will be the football project.
“If everything was based only on the money he would probably go to play in China. But I repeat: he can choose from many clubs, so the project will be crucial in his decision.”

The Super Eagles have dropped one place according to the latest rankings released by World football governing body, FIFA, as they are now 51st in the world and number eight in Africa.
In the month under review, the Super Eagles did not kick a ball but other movements in the global chat affected Nigeria to move down and now out of the top 50 in the world.

He is set to miss LaLiga matches against Sporting Gijon and Celta Vigo, as well as a Champions League trip to Borussia Monchengladbach, although Barca will hope to have him fit for the home match against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on October 19.

Dr. Olumide Akadiri, the Chief Medical Director, Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Okitipupa, has cautioned against excessive consumption of alcohol during the yuletide.
Akadiri, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Okitipupa, warned that alcohol was injurious to the kidney and liver which are very important organs in the human digestive systems.
The medical expert said that there were many patients in the hospital with cases of kidney and liver problems as a result of excessive consumption of alcohol.
According to him, alcohol silently and slowly destroys the liver and kidneys resulting in serious health problems which can be fatal.
Akadiri noted that excessive intake of alcohol was rampant during festivities and called for caution and moderation.
“Alcohol is very injurious to human kidneys and liver; these are very important organs of our digestive systems.
“People consume too many alcoholic drinks during festivities with the belief that it is the only way to celebrate; unfortunately, they are just gradually damaging their kidneys and liver.
“I think water is most beneficial and aid the body metabolism because soft drinks too have their own side effects.
“I also recommend that we cultivate the habit of adding more vegetables and fruits, which are rich in minerals and vitamins, to our diet to aid digestion and boost the immune system against diseases,” Akadiri advised.

Crystal palace coach Alan Pardew sacked

Crystal Palace sacked manager Alan Pardew on Thursday after a run of eight Premier League defeats in their last 10 games left the south London club in 17th place just a point above the relegation zone.
In a statement the club’s co-owner Steve Parish said: “I would like to put on record our sincere gratitude for the tremendous service Alan has given us, both in his time here as manager and previously as a player.
“Following a fantastic second half of 2014/15, the 2015/16 season culminated in only narrowly missing out on winning the FA Cup as well as securing our Premier League place for a record-breaking fourth time.
Pardew, a former Palace midfielder, was appointed in 2015, reports Reuters.
The former England manager Sam Allardyce, who lost his job as national team coach after becoming embroiled in a newspaper sting, has been tipped in the media as a possible replacement.
“During his tenure Alan’s hard work and dedication were without question, he has improved so many areas of the club and we wish him the very best for the future.

Injured West Ham striker Sakho out of Nations Cup

Injured West Ham United striker Diafra Sakho is facing a two-month lay-off, ruling the Senegal international out of the Africa Cup of Nations, Hammers’ manager Slaven Bilic revealed on Thursday.
Bilic reported: “He had a back operation and he’s going to be out for six to eight weeks. Of course it will rule him out for the African Nations Cup.”
The 26-year-old forward has made only two Premier League appearances this season, and will now miss the crucial festive period and Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Sakho last featured in the 1-1 draw at Manchester United on November 27, opening the scoring after 90 seconds before going off midway through the second half.
Bilic feels his squad will cope with the absence of Sakho and ruled out the possibility of going into the transfer market for striking options with Andy Carroll and club-record signing Andre Ayew returning to fitness.
“We played this whole part of the season without Diafra Sakho,” he added.
“We only had him for a couple of games but do we have a player that has the same characteristics Sakho has? The answer is no, but it is not easy to find a replacement in January.
“Our priority is (to focus) on the players that we have and that they show improvement. We have a good squad here but if something we are monitoring comes available then we are going to try and do it.”

Neville, however, is not convinced they have what it takes to finish the job next May.
The Sky Sports analyst said: “I didn’t think they would be champions at the start of the season. I’m still not sure, I wouldn’t fully trust any of them yet, but they do like they are producing the type (champions) performances.
“The Southampton away one, that’s the one where I thought, that’s a championship winning performance. But it is too early in the season to hand them the title.
“You still have to have doubts over them through the fact, for instance, if you got an injury to Eden Hazard, an injury to Diego Costa.
“You have to throw in the doubts that exist. They are such important players.”

Here’s How Much Lagos State Government Plans To Sell Bags Of Rice From December 15th

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it was ready to roll out Lake Rice on Dec. 15 to Lagosians at N13,000 per 50 kg towards the Yuletide celebrations.
Mr Sanni Okanlawan, Special Adviser on Food Security to Gov. Akinwumi Ambode, made the disclosure in Lagos during the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) National Agriculture Stakeholders Summit.
Okanlawan said that sales of the rice would be made at all the 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state to ensure proper distribution.
“Lake Rice is the acronym of both Lagos and Kebbi States joint product which will be out to the public on Dec. 15 at the rate of N13,000 per 50kg bag as it is already subsidised by the government.
“To make it more available, the
rice will be sold at the 57 LGAs and LCDAs for easy accessibility and to guard against unwanted persons diverting the product.
“The state government has put in place a committee that will ensure that Lagosians have the best Christmas celebration, that is why we are offering the wholesome and well packaged
rice,’’ Okanlawan stated.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the government’s efforts were in alignment with the Federal Government’s diversification drive from a mono-economy to agriculture. It will be recalled that Lagos and Kebbi states signed a historic MOU on rice production shortly after the Anchor borrowers scheme which creates resources for farmers was launched by President Muhammadu Buhari in Kebbi.

Rivers State executive Governor, Nyesom Wike and wife Justice Suzzette today celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary. The pair who met and kicked off their love story from Rivers State University of Science and Technology have been together since.
Below is how the wife shared their love story:
It’s funny how life sometimes takes us where we never plan or expect to go. For three years, we sat in the same lecture rooms and halls but never passed a word between each other.
It was only after I chanced upon his law note books in the possession of a mutual classmate that everything changed.
At that time, the law books in our library were expired and in most cases not available and we had to find other means to report our Nigerian case law. Most of us resorted to copying from others who had lawyer friends they visited in chambers and while there, used their law reports/books.
Thankfully, the situation is different today as not only has our Governor completed the long, abandoned building of the Facaulty of Law, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, but he has also furnished it and equipped the law library with modern books, law reports and even e-resources. The current students there are lucky to benefit from this upgrade as theirs is now a standard Facaulty of Law.
It surprised me then, to realize that he was indeed a serious minded student and not as I had earlier perceived. His notes were up to date as he took time to report more cases than were cited by our lecturers, which neccesarily meant better grades if you can put them all down in your answer sheets during tests and examinations.
I immediately coveted that notebook and pleaded with my classmate to loan me the book after she had finished, promising to return it in two days. She refused. Another request with the promise to return it in one day as I was prepared to sit up all night copying those cases, was declined . My last plea to photocopy the notebook and return it immediately fell on deaf ears. She told me to seek the permission of the owner, with the belief that I wouldnt dare.
And of course, she was right to think that as she knew that we had never once spoken to each other. At that point, I inquired from her, his name. She replied simply: “Wike”. I wondered how odd that name sounded as I’d never heard it before. I also wondered how to approach him as I believed that he disliked me as much as I did him.
But the desire to have that fully loaded note book was too strong. I could not give up without at least, making an attempt. As he passed by us, I called his name as I had just learnt: “excuse me, Wike”. He froze and I noticed his shock and disbelief. I started putting my words together, expecting him to scowl at me, thinking in his head – “Oh! So you have decided to talk to me now that you need my notebook eh?
He didn’t let me complete my request. He caught the drifrt so fast and he spoke to our mutual classmate, telling her to give me his note book after she had finished with it and he walked off. It was now my turn to be in shock! After I recovered, I started putting the heat on our classmate to give me the book asap.
One borrowed book led to another and yet another borrwed book and soon after, we became friends. I got to see the hardworking, focused, studios and serious minded person he was and still is. Before Iong, there was a marriage proposal. I declined as I didn’t see myself as the marrying kind but he wouldn’t give up.
He said to me that the moment he first set his eyes on me when he joined us in our second year out of the more than five years I was in that institution, he knew already that I was going to be his wife. 😄 That got me even more confused. Having noted all the qualities I had noticed in him, I knew that he was a man with very great prospects or potentials for success, as I’d told him then.
I therefore decided to accept his proposal and took a chance, believing that he would make me a happy woman. Today, the 19th of December, marks the 17th year we have been together as a married couple. He is a man that has exhibited excellent taste …. no wonder he chose and continues to choose m.
You promised to give me the world at that time but you have given me much more than I could have ever asked for. Our three adorable children are a testimony to that fact and I can’t tell you enough, how fulfilled I feel.
Please permit me to use this medium to share some of the life lessons I have learnt in these past 17 years of marriage, especially in reaching out to encourage our youths who have skewed perceptions about marriage.
You have to make the right decision about your marriage. I made a decision to become a happy wife 17 years ago, by contributing to build a happy marriage. I learnt that marriage in itself doesn’t make you happy. You have to make your marriage a happy one. Marriage is not what you get. Marriage is what you bring, what you give and what you do.
There is no perfect marriage or perfect couples. Rather, when two imperfect friends honour and celebrate each other, they are empowered to build up a great blossoming marriage with flourishing children.
Marriage, it has been said, is likened to an empty box that couples should labour to fill up with all the good things they want in their marriage – friendship, understanding, respect, love, etc. Love does not come packaged with any marriage. Love is in people and people put love in marriage. People infuse romance in marriage. Same thing with all the other values.
A couple must practice the art and form the habit of giving, loving, serving, forgiving, rewarding, praising, and just keeping the marriage box full always. If you take more and put less, the box empties out.
Let us challenge ourselves to work harder at achieving happier marriages. It will lead to more harmonious homes and communities and eventually a more prosperous and peaceful Rivers State. That is how powerful and endowed married couples are.
I recall, after we became engaged, attending a conference at Christ Church in December, 1996 where Selwyn Hughes, the initiator of the daily devotional called “every day with Jesus” featured and spoke to the young ones (at that time😄) about marriage. I bought his book then titled: Marriage as God intended
Rev. Mossy Madugba authographed the book on his behalf and on my request as it wasn’t possible for me to meet the author after the occasion. He wrote these words on the first page – “Blossom where you are planted”. Indeed, I can say without any fear of any contradiction, that by the grace of God, I have blossomed and will keep blossoming where the Lord, God has planted me.
Today, on this occasion of our 17th marriage anniversary, I celebrate my hardworking classmate, friend, lover and husband… Nyesom Ezenwo Nyesom Wike CON. We have been through thick, thin and thinner but just like old wine, it keeps getting better with time.
Happy 17th Marriage Anniversary to you, my love. May we forever stay young in each others eyes.
